His recruitment was an absolute soap opera, but Xavier Henry began making amends with the KU faithful tonight. The Freshman from Oklahoma set a Kansas Freshman debut record with 27 points (Wilt Chamberlain, of course, holds the debut record).
Even more impressively was the fact that Henry only took 12 shots. He was 8-12 from the field and 5-8 from three. He also made all 6 of his free throws. He also had 5 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal, a block and no turnovers. Clearly an impressive debut from Henry.
Cole Aldrich had 11 points and 8 rebounds and 4 blocks. He only took 5 shots from the floor.
Get ready for a lot of that from the Jayhawks this year as the deepest team in the country can afford to spread around the shots and the minutes and wear other teams down.
Not going to touch on this too much. Why? National Championships aren’t won in recruiting. Florida built their national championship teams on the back of three 4 star players and two 3 stars. National championships, with the exception of 2003 Syracuse, aren’t won with Freshmen in this era. Last year North Carolina was led by a Senior and a Junior. Kansas the year before had all Seniors and Juniors other than Darrell Arthur (and Cole Aldrich when he got limited PT).
If Derrick Rose, who monopolized the ball, couldn’t win a national championship, a small forward isn’t going to do it.
